FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Monday – June 15th, 2009

It was a hot weekend on and off the water at OWC as the Ten-80 WWA Wake Park National Championships wrapped up yesterday afternoon. Nick Davies, Reed Hansen, and Maxine Sapulette would all repeat their performances from the first stop of the WWA Wake Park Series in March winning the Pro Men, Pro Wakeskate, and Pro Women divisions respectively.

Saturday brought out all the crowds with the Amateur divisions riding in the morning and the park open to the public until 2pm when the Pro’s hit the water. The Quarter and Semi Finals saw some great performances from all the top riders in the sport. Despite the shaky weather we saw some good performances and moved on to the 8PM start for the Obstacles Only division. Riders took the water in a 10 minute jam format with 4 riders on the water all at once. As it’s typically one of the highlights, the Obstacles Only division went off and the top 8 riders were chosen to move on to Sunday.

Sunday started off with the Amateur divisions Finals, and the morning also brought some surprise performances and upsets in the Pro Men Semis. The Obstacles Only, Pro Wakeskate and Pro Women divisions had perfect conditions as Hansen and Sapulette repeated their victories with stellar performances.

The Pro Men Top 8 went down to a head-to-head format, and it was the most exciting and close heats ever to be seen during a Wake Park contest in the U.S.

Nick Davies would take the win over Keith Lidberg in Keith’s first head-to-head final, and claim his spot as top of the ranks in the WWA Wake Park Series. The Series will continue on this year with three more stops in France, the Ukraine and Germany in August.

A special thanks to Ten-80, the Three Collection by Keith Lidberg, the Orlando Watersports Complex, Performance, Wakeboarding Magazine, the Wake Park Project, Three Olives, Cablewakeboard.com, Sesitec, and DropShop.com

Wake Nation owner Peter Kennedy was most worried about what the wakeboarding pros will think about the region’s only cable water park.

At the grand opening celebration on Tuesday, June 2, Kennedy said the pros put his worries to rest. Seven of the top wakeboarding professionals helped celebrate the grand opening.

“This is one of the best cable parks we’ve been to,” said England-native Nick Davies, WWA Wake Park World Series 2009 world champion. “I head of it from other riders giving it a good word. It matches what they said.”

Wake Nation, at 201 Joe Nuxhall Way in Joyce Park, opened to the public last month and is the country’s seventh cable park. It allows people to water ski, wake board, knee board and water skate without a boat. Riders are pulled around the 1,800-foot oval lake by a cable attached to a six-tower cable pulley system.

“They did it so perfect,” said Tom Fooshee, a wakeboarding pro from San Marcus, Texas. “They didn’t cut by on anything, they did it so right.”

The cable park system was invented in Germany, and are about 150 parks around the world.

The reaction has been outstanding, Kennedy said. He said experienced and non-experienced riders have flocked to the water park. Kennedy said about 40 percent of customers have never attempted wakeboarding or skiing.

“It’s been way beyond our expectations,” he said.

Skullcandy is on track to be #1 headphone company

Skullcandy is rapidly growing.

There’s a rumor that there’s a recession,” said Jeremy Andrus, (pictured right) president of the Utah-based Skullcandy headphones company. “But we’re not feeling it.”. . . In 2005, the company had $1.3 million in sales, while this year it’s on track to surpass the $100 million mark. Last fall, the company had about 30 employees. Today, it has more than 60. . . In 2008, nearly 10 million people purchased Skullcandy headphones, which are sold in more than 60 retailers. That catapulted the company to the industry’s No. 2 spot, second only to audio behemoth Sony. . . Brand loyalty is driving Skullcandy’s growth. “We’re gunning for No. 1,” Andrus said, displaying more of the company’s trademark bravado.

the history of the ollie

Invented in the late 1970s by Alan “Ollie” Gelfand, the ollie has become a skateboarding fundamental, the basis for many other more complicated tricks.
In its simplest form, the ollie is a jumping technique that allows skaters to hop over obstacles and onto curbs, etc. What’s so amazing about the ollie is the way the skateboard seems to stick to the skater’s feet in midair. Seeing pictures of skaters performing soaring 4-foot ollies, many people assume that the board is somehow attached to the skater’s feet. It’s not. What’s even more amazing about the ollie is that to get the skateboard to jump up, the skater pushes down on the board! The secret to this paradoxical maneuver is rotation around multiple axes. Let’s take a closer look.

Now ollie over to 5boards.com and check out others that ollie on the largest social site for boarders!
